There is a really famous film in Japan based on a true story called “Biri gyaru” (in the American version “Flying colours”). “Biri” and “gyaru” are two new Japanese words. “Biri” is the worst student in the class and “gyaru” is a girl with golden hair, a lot of make up who wears short skirts.
This is a story of a Japanese high school student, Sayaka, who hasn’t been studying for 5 years but then she has to get ready for her university entrance examination and so things have to change!
It is really difficult to enter in a university in Japan because of the high amounts of tests, so students usually study for these exams for 2 or 3 years attending cramming schools.
In the movie Sayaka’s mother sends her to a cramming school where she chooses the Keio University, considered one of the most prestigious and difficult university in Japan. Her family, in particular her father, believes that her destiny is failure, nothing more. Her tutor never gives up and so Sayaka becomes determined to study hard to prove that her parents are wrong.
Over the course of the summer holidays, Sayaka works diligently, without hanging out with her friends anymore, changing her physical aspect to show her seriousness.
Her results progressively improve on practice tests and her academic deviation value increases from 30 to 70 percent… and here we have the happy ending. The message is clear: we have to be confident with ourselves believing in our possibilities.
